Mike's Memo

This month we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of America. It is easy to see that a lot has changed in 250 years. The beauty of our constitution is that it is incomplete and was written so that our growing country could adapt to the changes that our founding fathers knew would take place. I had just finished my junior year of high school as America celebrated her 200th anniversary. Back then I didn't give much thought to what our country would be like 50 years into the future.

There are so many differences between July 1976 and July 2026. Not all changes are bad. Modern technology has ushered in a transformation in communication. In 1976 the Eagles released the song Hotel California. Perhaps they were able to see into the future a bit. Words like "It’s a lonely place", "we are just prisoners here of our own devise (s), and "you can check out, but you can never leave", really does define our culture. One of saddest aspects of our culture shifting is the fact that the church seems to be moving right along with it. God has called us to be different and unique. I read a quote the other day that said “If your life makes sense to an unbeliever, you must be doing something wrong.”

Read that line again.

America is 250 years old. The church is over 2000 years old. The constitution is incomplete and always evolving. The Word of God is absolute and never changing.

God has placed each of us in His church for His glory. God has placed each church in a community to be His light to a world that is falling farther and farther into the darkness of cultural adaptation.

There is no doubt that I will not live to see America's 300th anniversary. All I can do is be the light for future generations.

Love you, Mike
